My Prediction
Mazatlán FC by 1Strap in, we're taking a wild ride down through the Mexican soccer landscape today. Our tour guides? None other than Mazatlán FC and Puebla. And let me tell you, these guys have had some scuffles in the past. You remember that nail-biter in February '23 when Puebla hammered Mazatlán, 3 to 1? But old Mazatlán didn't take that lying down, oh no. Those guys came back swinging, snatching victories in '23 and '25, not to mention that somewhat tepid draw in '24.
Right about now, you'd think Mazatlán is a sure bet, wouldn't you? Not so fast, sporty. Mazatlán's recent performance has been, let's say, underwhelming. Insignificant goal against CD Guadalajara followed by a loss to Club Tijuana, a total zero against Club América and a stale mate with Cruz Azul. Not exactly the stuff of legends.
Now, glance over the fence to Puebla's camp. Not a single win in their recent matches either, but they haven't been completely goal-shy. They've been able to find the back of the net a couple of times. But when your defense is more porous than my grandfather's rain bucket, goals on the other end don't amount to much.
Let's cut to the chase here. A tricky wrestling match in the offing at Liga MX Apertura, with two somewhat pedestrian teams. Mazatlán, based on past matchups seems like they might have Puebla's number. Will they dial it today? Maybe. They've a slight edge, a very slight edge. If they can patch up their defense a tad, maybe, just maybe they could pip Puebla by a whisker.
