Alexandrova in 3 sets.Ah! The Rosmalen Grass Court Championships. Semi-finalists Elise Mertens and Ekaterina Alexandrova square off once more. The stirring aroma of fresh-cut grass and something that can only be described as impending disappointment for one of these players fills the air.
Earlier this year, in the throes of February, Alexandrova walked off the court with a double love victory over Mertens. A morale crushing loss that Mertens is eager to avenge. Given her recent performances bagelling Yuan, Sakkari, and Tomova, it might seem Mertens is ready to conquer. However, let's not be too hasty ... now what was that old saying...ah yes, there is many a slip twixt the cup and the lip.
Indeed, Mertens is not the only one coming in hot. Alexandrova, herself, notched impressive victories against competitors like Kudermetova, Blinková, Bolkvadze, though we mustn't overlook her straight set loss to Gauff earlier in June. And let us remember, Alexandrova is the second seed in this tournament. It’s the kind of ranking that doesn’t come about from winning bingo nights, I assure you that.
What we have here is a showdown between two athletes desperately trying to outperform each other, which is basically the definition of tennis...but I digress.
