Oh boy, have we got a clash for the ages today, a truly titanic matchup of distinctly average proportions, with the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks flying into the Trojan territory to lock horns with the Troy Trojans. Now, let's split the wheat from the chaff, shall we?
Last year, the Trojans were galloping high with a solid 45-14 blowout over the Warhawks. But as fate would have it, their regular season’s been about as smooth as sandpaper this time around with a less than stellar 1-3 record. Meanwhile, the Warhawks are flapping their wings at a comfortable 2-1.
Keeping in view their recent glories or lack thereof, the Warhawks’ visit to Texas ended with their feathers severely ruffled by the Longhorns. On the other side of the fence, Trojans had a comfortable romp against the Florida A&M Rattlers, but the Iowa Hawkeyes and Memphis Tigers weren't as accommodating.
Moving onto our quarterbacks, the Warhawks' General Booty has indeed shown some solid passing with 234 yards under his belt, but let's not go wild with praise, his touchdown to interception ratio leaves quite a bit to be desired. The Trojans, meanwhile, have their own gun-slinging duo with Will Crowder and Matthew Caldwell showing good form, particularly the former with an impressive 5 touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Offense is nothing without a few meaty, maraudering running backs and receivers wreaking havoc on the gridiron. Topping the Warhawks' offensive charts over the past month, we’ve got Ahmad Hardy, Taven Curry, and Davon Wells. The Trojans unfurled their own offensive arsenal with Devonte Ross, Damien Taylor and Gerald Green donning the armor well.
For those with their hearts set on the unsung heroes of defense, the stats from the last month show us that Louisiana-Monroe's Wydett Williams, Carl Glass and Billy Pullen have been merrily throwing bodies left, right and center. Trojans' defensive heralds Brendan Jackson, Justin Powe and Jordan Stringer are not to be outdone either.
So, after that detour down statistic lane, where does that leave us? I say, Troy's on a war path. Despite the rough start to the season, they're looking to hold the line at home, and I have a sneaky feeling they just might do it.
